Petar Lubarda was born on 27th July, 1907 in Ljubotin, Montenegro. He studied painting in Belgrade and Paris. He graduated from the Art School in Belgrade (1925) and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1926). From 1932 until his death he lived in Belgrade, with exception of period 1946 - 1950 when he was a professor at Art School of Herceg Novi.

His work was inspired by Montenegrin history and landscape. In the 1930’s and 1940’s he painted landscapes (views of Montenegro and scenes of Paris) and still life in a style close to expressionism. In the late 1940’s and the 1950’s he created monumental, dynamic compositions on national epic and historical themes (Battle on Kosovo Polje, fresco, 1953; Executive Veće of the Socialist Republic of Serbia, Belgrade), and in the mid-1950’s he took up abstract expressionism (The Sun Snake, 1962, Museum of Modern Art, Belgrade). He won many awards, in Europe, Brazil and on Tokyo Biennale. He was a Yugoslav painter and a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade (1961).

He died on 13th February, 1974, in Belgrade. He was considered to be an influential figure on post-war painting in former Yugoslavia.
