In the late 18th and early 19th century, Serbian art boasted of skilled masters who successfully met the rising demand for portraiture as well as the unabated demand for icon painting.Ecclesiastical architecture easily melded with the imperatives of the new era of Classicism.The architectonics of altar partitions, with their accent on the construction of classical pillars and ornamention, embraced the shapes inspired by antiquity.Ecclesiastical art remained tied to the recently adopted experiences of the baroque period.

Đura Jakšić is a symbol of Serbian Romantic literature and painting.The question of whether he was failed natural artistic talent or whether he remained an incomplete great poet does not abate.He was, in fact, a strong creative figure who was contiunally interweaving the beuaty of words and brush strokes, an undividable creator who as an author used words to colourfully describe people and events, while as a painter vividly and convincingly told a story of the contents of his pictures.

Đorđe Krstić is in many ways the figurehead of the 19th century Serbian art and culture - among other things, because at the close of the epoch of romantic historicsm he was on the reoad to making a completely authentic contribution by harmonizing national tradition and modern figurative experssion.The Road to maturity was not short.In 1873 he found himself at the Art Academy in Munich, going on to continue more advanced studies in Rome in 1881, where he strenghtened his faith in the lasting values of bygone artistic epochs.
