Silvestro Lega

                                          (  The Folk Song - 1867 )


Lega moved to Florence in 1843 and studied under Enrico Pollastrini and Antonio Ciseri at the Accademia di Belle Arti, as well as with the Purist Luigi Mussini.In 1852, he exhibited David Placating Saul at the Accademia's Triennale .From 1860, he became a guest of the Batelli family in the Piagentina countryside , where he executed the first studies marking his changeover to then  Macchiaioli movement.In 1861, he participated in the First National Exhibition with Ambush of the Italian Bersaglieri  and return of the Italian Bersaglieri.Lega's presence in Piagentina attracted other artists to the area ( Borrani, Abbati, Signori and Sernesi), but after Virginia Batelli's death in 1870, he went to Romagna.After years of misery and economic hardship, Lega returned to Florence in 1880 to be near his close friends.From 1886, he often visited the Gabbro countryside, continuing to paint enthusiastically despite serious eyesight problems.
